Join our team as the Head Sommelier at Aloria on the 23rd floor of The Star Brisbane.

The Star Brisbane is Australia’s newest entertainment hub at the heart of the new Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct. The first phase is now open, with more venues and experiences on the way. The Star Brisbane offers a variety of new dining, bars, and unique entertainment options. It also includes a five-star luxury hotel, The Star Grand, and a state-of-the-art Event Centre.

This transformational project has brought even more excitement and anticipation to burgeoning Brisbane. It will redefine how people play, shop, and socialise in the river city.

The Head Sommelier, reporting to the Food & Beverage Operations Manager, offers a unique opportunity to uncork your love of wine! In this role you will work closely with our Venue Manager whilst you lead, develop, and mentor our food and beverage team in the delivery of excellence relating to our wine program. You will take our guests on a journey whilst offering expert guidance and recommending wines that complement food choices and meet their preferences.

A few of your responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Restaurant Managers and Culinary team in the matching of wines with the food offering
  • Implement the signature restaurant wine strategy that drives cash revenue and delivers margin improvement
  • Ensuring procurement of wines that are market relevant in both new world and old world categories
  • Assist with the development and implementation of wine education to raise product knowledge across the property, drive sales and establish The Star as a fine wine destination
  • Take a hands-on approach and lead from the front to guide and coach the team with respect to product knowledge, technical service upskilling, upselling and cross-selling
  • Assist with the analysis of relevant training requirements and support the training team with the development and implementation of structured training and development programs

 

What we will be looking for

  • Extensive knowledge of wine and experience working with suppliers
  • Demonstrated ability in developing productive relationships
  • Accreditation of Responsible Service of Alcohol
  • Cert IV in Hospitality is highly desirable
  • Membership of Australian Sommelier Association

About you

From wine to glass, you will be the orchestrator of memorable guest experiences across The Star Brisbane’s food and beverage outlets. You will come with a wealth of prior knowledge in a similar role within premium venues. Developing long lasting relationships and driving new ideas will be embedded in your ways of working. You will have the ability to build relationships both internally with your team, and externally with suppliers, to build wine lists across multiple venues that are not only creative but have been built with commercial sensibility.
